Since the new crushing plant was delivered by Nordic Bulk in 2023, Georg Tveit AS identified a need to increase its stockpiling capacity for aggregates. To meet this need, Nordic Bulk supplied an automated conveyor and shuttle conveyor system designed to provide more efficient, controlled and gentle material handling.

The new solution has also enabled better utilisation of existing equipment and stockpile areas. By relocating the stacker to the aggregate stockpile, the available storage capacity for aggregates has been doubled.

The expansion of storage capacity was completed in September 2026 and is now an integral part of the facility.

More than 100 years of experience in quartz production

Georg Tveit AS operates the Snekkevik quarry in Sannidal and is a leading producer of quartz in Norway. With over 100 years of experience in the industry, the company produces approximately 320,000 tonnes of quartz annually for customers in the concrete and steel industries, among others.

A modern crushing plant built for the future

In 2022, Georg Tveit AS invested in a new crushing plant supplied by Nordic Bulk. The plant was completed in spring 2023 and is tailored to ensure efficient, reliable and future-oriented quartz production.

The plant has been designed to optimise material flow and make the best possible use of the site’s natural terrain. With a short distance from the quarry to the crusher and a layout that allows the material to move largely by gravity through the process, both energy consumption and internal transportation are reduced.

The solution combines modern process equipment with features such as magnetic separation for removing metal contamination and a double-stage crushing and screening process to ensure consistent quality of the final product. The plant is designed for an annual production capacity of up to 500,000 tonnes of quartz, with a throughput of up to 300 tonnes per hour.

Ease of operation and the working environment have also been key considerations. The plant is equipped with a modern control system that gives operators full visibility of the production process, while the entire plant can be monitored and controlled directly from an iPad. Integrated dust and noise reduction measures contribute to a better working environment and reduced impact on the surrounding area.

Increased stockpiling capacity for aggregates

Georg Tveit AS has now expanded its stockpiling capacity for the 0–32 mm and 32–90 mm fractions.

– This investment builds on the foundation established with the crushing plant in 2023. We have had good experience with both the solution and our cooperation with Nordic Bulk, and see this expansion as a natural next step in the long-term development of the Snekkevik quarry, says Bjørn Thomas Tveit, Managing Director of Georg Tveit AS.

As part of the project, Nordic Bulk installed an approximately 30-metre-long conveyor feeding material to a shuttle conveyor. The shuttle travels along a 60-metre rail track, allowing the material to be distributed in a controlled manner along the full length of the stockpile.

The system is fully automated and level-controlled, ensuring consistent operation and optimal utilisation of the available stockpiling capacity. By moving the discharge point along the rail track, the drop height is significantly reduced compared with a conveyor with a fixed discharge point.

The existing tunnel beneath the stockpile remains an important part of the site’s material handling system. It is equipped with several vibrating feeders that provide controlled and efficient reclaiming of material from the stockpile. From there, the material is conveyed onwards to the shiploader for loading onto vessels, creating an efficient logistics flow from stockpile to ship.

– This solution provides both increased stockpiling capacity and better control of material handling. By reducing the drop height, it helps protect the final product while also reducing dust and noise. The solution also enables more efficient use of the stockpile area and smoother operation, says Per Erik Holm, Project Manager at Nordic Bulk.

Key benefits

  • Lower noise levels

  • Reduced dust

  • Less degradation of the material

  • Gentler handling of the final product

  • Better utilisation of stockpiling capacityLower noise level

Continued development of the plant

For Georg Tveit AS, reliable support after commissioning is also an important part of investing in production equipment.

– When investing in production equipment, it is important to have a supplier that also provides support after the plant has been commissioned. We find that Nordic Bulk has a strong service and aftermarket team, which gives us confidence as we continue to invest in the plant, says Bjørn Thomas Tveit.

The stockpiling expansion was completed in September 2026 and is now an integrated part of the plant. The investment provides increased flexibility, better utilisation of the available stockpiling area and gentler handling of the final product.
