Following the commissioning of the new crushing plant in 2023, Georg Tveit AS is continuing to invest in its operations. The company is now expanding its stockpiling capacity with the installation of a new automated conveyor and shuttle system, enabling more efficient, controlled and gentle material handling.

Over 100 Years of Quartz Expertise

Georg Tveit AS operates the Snekkevik quarry in Sannidal and is a leading producer of quartz in Norway. With more than a century of industry experience, the company produces over 250,000 tonnes of quartz annually, supplying customers across sectors including the concrete and steel industries.

A Modern Crushing Plant for the Future

In 2022, Georg Tveit AS invested in a new crushing plant supplied by Nordic Bulk. The plant was completed in spring 2023 and is built to ensure efficient, reliable, and future-oriented quartz production.

The plant is designed to maximise material flow while making optimal use of the site’s natural topography. The short distance from the quarry to the crusher, combined with a layout that allows material to move largely by gravity, significantly reduces both energy consumption and internal material handling.

The solution combines advanced process equipment with innovative features such as magnetic separation for the removal of metal contaminants, as well as a two-stage crushing and screening process that ensures a high-quality end product. The plant is designed for an annual production of over 250,000 tonnes of quartz, with a capacity of up to 300 tonnes per hour.

A strong emphasis has also been placed on usability and the working environment. The plant is equipped with a modern control system that provides operators with full real-time visibility of production, and the entire plant can be monitored and controlled via an iPad. Integrated dust suppression and noise reduction solutions further enhance the working environment while minimising environmental impact.

Expanding Storage Capacity

Georg Tveit AS has now decided to further invest in expanding storage capacity for the 0–11 mm and 11–80 mm product fractions.

As part of the project, Nordic Bulk will install an approximately 30-metre conveyor feeding material onto a shuttle conveyor. The shuttle travels along a 60-metre rail track, enabling controlled distribution of material along the full length of the stockpile.

The existing reclaim tunnel (culvert) beneath the stockpile will remain a key part of the material handling system. It is fitted with multiple vibrating feeders, ensuring controlled and efficient material reclaim. From here, the material is conveyed directly to the shiploader, enabling a seamless logistics flow from stockpile to vessel.

The solution is fully automated and level-controlled, ensuring stable operation and optimal use of storage capacity. By allowing the discharge point to travel along the rail track, the drop height of the aggregate is significantly reduced compared to a fixed discharge conveyor.

This provides several key advantages:

  • Reduced noise levels
  • Less dust
  • Less material degradation
  • More gentle handling of the final product
  • Improved utilization of storage capacity

The new stockpiling system will contribute to increased capacity and more efficient material handling, while also enhancing the working environment and minimizing environmental impact.

In the video below, Bjørn Thomas Tveit, Managing Director of Georg Tveit AS, shares his experience with the facility and outlines plans for its further development.

Construction of the stockpile expansion will begin in August, with completion scheduled for September. We are proud to continue our collaboration and would like to thank Georg Tveit AS for their trust and strong partnership.
